Preoperative Considerations

Consent:

  • Nose bleeding

Anesthesia/Positioning:

  • Supine
  • Sniffing position
  • If awake nasal fiberoptic intubation, can have patient sitting up

Other:

  • Contraindicated with cranial base fractures
  • Also inquire about hx of nasal trauma, surgery, etc.

Armamentarium:

  • Nasal endotracheal tube (regular or Rae)
  • Lubricating Jelly
  • Nasopharyngeal airway "nasal trumpet"
  • McGill forcep
  • Laryngoscope (conventional or video)
  • Fiberoptic scope if awake intubation
  • Tape or suture to secure nasal tube
