Preoperative Considerations

Consent:

  • None

Anesthesia/Positioning:

  • Open or protected airway
  • If orally intubated, ensure tube is always protected during procedure

Other:

  • None

Armamentarium:

  • 2-0 silk, nylon, prolene
  • Scissor

Technique

  • The traction suture can be used in lieu of a clamp or penetrating towel clip
  • It allows for good retraction with minimal risk of inadvertently tearing or crushing tissue
  • Needle can be passed from ventral to dorsal or vice versa
  • The suture is essentially a large horizontal mattress
  • Tie an air knot to prevent tissue ischemia (particularly for long cases)
